The Daintree Rainforest

350 million years ago the creation of the world's greatest rainforest began... the Daintree. It is 300,000,000 years ago and the climate starts to warm and because of that around 200,000,000 years after that Australia was almost completely covered in rainforest.

Australia was one of the first continents to split off of the super continent Gondwana which makes it so diverse and varying in landscapes such as rainforest & desert because of climate change and adaptation.

The rainforest has shrunk extreme amounts since around twenty million years ago because of climate change which has led to a large amount of animals being forced nearer to the coast where it is more moist.

This change has dramatically impacted some species and usually not for the better. For example the Cassowary is endangered because of habitat loss and change in climate. As a matter of fact there are only a bit over a thousand Cassowaries in the wild. Cassowaries are essential to the rainforest because they are some of the only birds that can eat some of the larger fruits and spread the seeds in their dung.

The Daintree consists of two parts: Mossman gorge and Cape tribulation. Cape tribulation is very dense and some of the road there is a bit dusty. It also runs along coast and is very large(but not as large as Mossman!). Mossman gorge has many creeks running through the forest. In fact Mossman gorge is also very picturesque and in some places if you squint your eyes it looks a bit like Lord of the rings because of all the bright colors and dense foliage.

Southern Cassowary

The plant life is in the Daintree is very very lush and diverse and thats only one of the reasons it's so cool that it makes other rainforests seem bland!

There are many types of ferns like...

  • Cycad fern
  • Birds nest fern
  • Epiphytes
  • Climbing ferns
  • Lithophytes(ferns growing on rocks)
  • Alexandra palm
  • Basket fern
  • Coopers tree fern

There are also a lot of really cool trees and vines like...
  • Lawyer vine
  • Fig tree
  • Palm tree
  • Eucalyptus tree
  • Gum tree

There are also a lot of assorted plants like...
  • Cycads
  • Mangroves
  • Horsetails
  • Conifers

Speaking of green things there are also green ants (that taste like lemons and wasabi) in the forest along with crocodiles (yikes)!

What I am trying to tell you is that Australia is one of the coolest countries in the world and the Daintree is one of the coolest things in the Australia!

THE DAINTREE ROCKS!
